Stella – Run Aground

“Stella – Run Aground” was inspired by a marine disaster outside Struisbaai Harbour and honours our local fishermen and the NSRI who assisted in the successful salvaging of the vessel.  The danger of the ocean and the impact of disaster on the lives of those whose livelihood depends on the ocean is illustrated in this sculpture.  Their vessel, having run aground, the fishermen are attempting to salvage it with urgency before the sea claims its prize.  A twist in this tale is that the owner of the original sculpture has met up with the erstwhile captain of the vessel after Captain Sias’ freshly caught fish “ran aground” on rocks off-shore.  He was able to retrieve the fish and upon presenting it to the hapless fisherman discovered the relation with Stella.
